So When is a Minority a Minority

Antonin ScaliaSo when is a minority a minority?

“It’s not up to the courts to invent new minorities that get special protections,” Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia recently told the Federalist Society. He was defending his decisions on DOMA and California Prop 8, implying gay people are a “minority” under the law. Scalia often makes these anti-“minority” decsions. Replace the word gay with almost any group smaller than the white male, and sometimes when it suits him, female population and he is exhaustingly predictable.

Scalia often lives in a topsy-turvy world where his own words oddly prove him wrong and this is one of those times.

The Bubblewrap Generation Lives

Bubblewraped Car KidsThe Bubblewrap Generation lives. Insecure parents who want to “protect” their kids from every evil in the Big Bad World raise them. Plus, they also demand everyone else help protect their kid by banishing normal childhood behavior because, you know, parenting is so haaaard.

No shit Sherlock. It is hard, but that’s what you signed up for. Suck it up and stop expecting the world to capitulate to your irrational wish to bubblewrap your kids and hide them away in a locked storage container.

I have a 24-year old daughter. She is bright, highly functional, loving, responsible — and most importantly — able to cope with the real world sans pants-pissing terror. Racism in America, Land of the Free and Home of the Intransigent

Oprah WinfreyStory UpdateOprah Talks To Swiss Newspaper About Alleged Racist Encounter

Racism in America, land of the free and home of the intransigent. Every word, every action– no matter the subject or size — brings a great gnashing of the national dentures. Understanding, compassion, or any emotion other than hate is not just difficult to find, it is extinct.

The latest weirdness is Oprah Winfrey’s $38,000 purse. Considering 98% of the world can’t imagine $38,000 for food and the remaining 2% have skewed priorities, a fight between a Swiss clerk and a woman with more money and power than God hardly qualifies as a realistic stand-in for international racism.

Was the clerk a racist? Quite possibly. She might be a stone cold neo-nazi, but there isn’t a shred of evidence to suggest or disprove it. There is only “she said, she said.” Should she have politely gotten the purse for Oprah? Undoubtedly. That is what good customer service is about. But being an asscake about it doesn’t prove racism either.
