Self-Loathing Turns to Scandal

Larry Craig Cartoon

One likes to play footsie, the other has a gay meet-up outside the Pope’s apartments, and they both use excuses as thin as the paper stuck to Larry Craig’s wide-standing shoes to explain it. The amazing thing isn’t that these men are looking for love in all the wrong places, it’s that they feel the need to sneak around about it at all.

After being caught on Italian TV making advances toward a man he’d contacted in a gay chat room, Monsignor Tommaso Stenico said he did it, “…to better understand this mysterious and faraway world which, by the fault of a few people — among them some priests — is doing so much harm to the Church.”

Tommaso, I hate to tell you this, but that world isn’t mysterious nor faraway. You’re hip-deep in it. And guess what, it’s not causing the church or society harm. It’s sanctimonious prigs like you who loathe themselves so much they feel the compulsion to rabidly attack others that are.

Homosexuality is no new thing. At various times in human history it’s been an accepted practice. It does no harm to anyone else and is capable of nurturing solid relationships of love and respect - relationships that Larry and Tommaso claim to represent, oddly enough. But those who project their self-loathing onto others will continue to be caught up in these “scandals” not because they are gay, but because they’re scared to death that getting a hard-on when the track coach walks by is the most vile thing in all creation. Instead of trying to convince a judge to let you take back your guilty plea to “clear your good name” or saying, “It’s all false; it was a trap. I was a victim of my own attempts to contribute to cleaning up the church with my psychoanalyst work”, you should simply say this, “I’m out and I’m loud and I’m proud.”

Now, doesn’t that feel so much better?

there is just one problem with what you say. it makes way too much sense.

I don’t particularly care if religious people condemn this that or the over behaviors. What bothers me is that these religious groups, who are opposed to state interference in religion, use the state to enforce their beliefs. Isn’t it weird that a cop was in the bathroom in the first place policing the behavior of consenting adults? If they were just satisfied with preaching, I wouldn’t care so much about their beliefs.

No! You’re wrong! Homosexuality is the #1 threat to western civilization! It’s going to kill us all if upstanding men like Senator Craig and that Italian guy don’t go undercover and expose this scourge!

    Rev,
    Sorry. I can’t help myself.

    Hiromi,
    I agree wholeheartedly.

    Woozie,
    OK. If you say so.

More and more, people just aren’t buying the claptrap BS of the Larry Craigs or the Father Fellatios of the world. Today’s kids don’t have a problem with gay people. It’s going to take having all of us old farts die off in order to take the next step toward rational and respectful acceptance of people for who they are and what they can do, rather than who gives ‘em wood.

    Mark,
Good points, although I’m guessing that it’ll take way more than a generation to put the kibosh on these people. Homophobia has been around for centuries and racism is still around despite some advances and culling of the herd.

Still each kid who has been raised properly is one less we have to educate in the future.

Whaddaya Think?
